This study explores factors that impact upon the overall quality of life of elderly Ukrainian immigrant women in Saskatchewan. Three generations of women were included in the research process, as a daughter and granddaughter of each elderly participant were also interviewed. These second and third generation participants were included in the study in order to provide data in regards to their perceptions about the factors that impact upon the quality of life of their mother or Baba. A theoretical orientation that integrated postmodern feminist methodology was used to frame this qualitative research study.

A sample of 20 women between the ages of 17 and 88 was drawn from two distinct geographic areas within the province of Saskatchewan. These 20 women represented seven distinct family units. Audio taped in-depth interviews provided the primary source of data, and a schedule consisting of open-ended questions derived from the literature guided the interviews. Data analysis began with the first interview and continued throughout data collection.

Findings revealed that the elderly Ukrainian immigrant women interviewed for this study perceive their quality of life as generally good. The primary theme that emerged was that relationships play a very important role in the lives of these women, and in their perceptions about personal life quality. In particular, three categories of relationships were highlighted: marital relationships, family relationships, and community relationships Within each of these categories, specific roles were identified. The data provided by the daughters and granddaughters supported these findings.

Six of the seven elderly women interviewed for this study were widowed. However, none of them referred to themselves as widows. In fact, they have all continued to identify with the role of wife even though their spouses are deceased. In terms of family relationships, all of the elderly women identified themselves as caregivers even though they have not all been able to continue to actively provide care throughout their later years. All of these women identified most strongly with the role of Baba (grandmother) as opposed to the role of mother. In terms of community relationships, these women have experienced significant changes in role identification. In particular, they described opportunities as they have aged to take on limited leadership roles within their respective faith communities, and within other community-based organizations.

This study supports previous social work research by emphasizing the critical importance of the social worker understanding issues related to the religious, spatial and ethnic diversity amongst specific immigrant groups. Also important, when working with elderly members of immigrant groups, is an understanding of the impact of the circumstances surrounding immigration. The elderly Ukrainian immigrant women interviewed for this study further revealed the importance of marital, family, and community relationships in their lives, specifically in terms of the way in which these relationships impact upon their quality of life.
