This project examined adult children's parental caregiving attitudes and behaviors using the Longitudinal Study of Generations. Three separate studies were conducted. In the first study, longitudinal data were used to provide a picture of some of the major changes within the family over the last 3 decades. Using the context of family change, cross-sectional analyses explored predictors of adult children's willingness to provide care to an aging parent. Gender role ideologies, work-family obligations, and intergenerational closeness were examined. Findings suggest that caregiving behaviors are shaped by a number of work, family, and parent-child relationship factors.

Using data from two points in time (1971 and 1997), the second study examined if and how a mother's earlier-life values and family structures shape her adult children's willingness to provide care nearly 3 decades later. The question was explored if traditional family structures or traditional values shape elder care. Results indicate that a mother's political ideology and gender role ideology are predictors of adult children's caregiving responsibility; however, none of a mother's values or family structures predicts actual care behaviors. Taken together, it was demonstrated that even though mothers pass values on to their offspring, these values do not shape actual caregiving behaviors.

Finally, the third study explored the division of elder care and household labor. Using relative resource theory, gender role ideology, and life course variables, elder caregiving was analyzed through the lens of household labor theories. Results demonstrate that household labor theories support the division of household chores but do not explain the care provided to aging parents later in life. This finding also suggests that elder care is a type of caregiving that is unique and distinct from care labor performed earlier in the life course. Taken together, all three studies appear to be pointing to the same conclusion: In the context of adult children's life, the work-family obligations and the closeness they have with their aging parent appear to be the most important factors shaping their willingness and ability to provide later life care.
