Many replicated findings on gender differences in cognition suggest female superiority on language ability and perceptual speed and male superiority on motor ability, mental rotation, and spatial perception tasks. The presence of differences in cognitive performance that can definitively be ascribed to sex would have profound and highly relevant implications to basic understanding of brain functioning. However, the presence of cognitive gender differences is a highly controversial topic given the sociocultural implications that tend to be ascribed to any gender-based cognitive differences. The literature on gender-based cognitive differences shows great variability across studies, which suggests the possibility of one or more confounding variables. One such confounding explanation is the fact that neuropsychological tests of domain specific cognitive performance, which is central to the hypothesis of gender differences, cannot be argued to be truly domain specific in that all cognitive tests share a considerable degree of overlap in the functional domain variance that they explain. Two hundred and eleven participants were administered a neuropsychological battery. A single principal component factor was extracted that reflected the shared variance, and was then used as a control variable to determine if the effect of gender was minimized on standard neuropsychological factors. Gender was found to be significant on 3 out of 6 uncorrected neuropsychological factors (Non-Contextual Verbal Memory p = .00, Attention and Working Memory p = .03, Processing Speed and Visual Perception p = .02). Current results suggest that neuropsychological measures share a considerable amount of variance. However, robust gender differences in cognitive domains are not solely the effects of shared variance.Subjects--Topical Terms:
