Journeys into Later Life is an ethnographic study of older middle-class women in contemporary Japan who pursue self-cultivation in communities of learning. Based on eighteen months of fieldwork, it examines the aspirations of professional housewives in their fifties and sixties to effect new forms of "gendered mobility" in later life. Women draw on financial resources and time associated with their class position to build social networks and pursue embodied training to live an active old age. Their pursuit of gendered mobility constitutes a form of social activism against the injustices of gender asymmetry and bifurcated life paths deriving from their position within Japanese society.

Journeys into Later Life interweaves women's stories with those of their retired husbands, many of whom worked as salarymen for corporations during Japan's rise as a major economic power. It traces the lives of these men, from their absorption into corporate life through to their loss of meaning upon retirement. The milestone of mandatory retirement provides a remarkably instructive lens to elucidate many aspects of the cultural dynamics of urban middle-class marriage. The challenges and negotiations triggered by this transition are the legacy of decades of nearly complete division of family labor.

Drawing on studies of aging, gender, and social class, Journeys into Later Life analyzes the life stage of the fifties and sixties as a period of ongoing negotiation of gender asymmetries and corporate norms. This work explores self-cultivation as a multifaceted phenomenon, as both a source of redemption and a vehicle for social critique.
