Women age in a youth-oriented society where anti-aging messages and solutions abound. Yet, the majority of body image research has focused on younger women. This study investigated body satisfaction among middle-aged (40 to 59 years) and older (60 years and over) women. Correlates of body satisfaction, the importance women place on body image relative to other life domains and goals, and the relationship between body satisfaction and well-being were examined. In addition, the life-span theory of control was used as a framework to investigate the processes involved in achieving body satisfaction (Heckhausen & Schulz, 1995). This theory states that primary control (i.e., behavioural attempts) has greater adaptive value, though the ability to make use of it decreases with age, thereby increasing the employment of secondary control (i.e., cognitive attempts). The sample consisted of 362 community-dwelling women aged 40 and older (X = 56.6, SD = 11.69, range = 40 to 91). Consistent with previous research, body satisfaction was not significantly related to chronological age, but was related to subjective age, measures of socio-economic status, and self-rated health. While participants indicated that a number of other areas in life took precedence over body image (e.g., health), appearance was still perceived as important and satisfaction with this area of life was related to psychological well-being. Primary control was significantly related to body satisfaction. In terms of proposed secondary control strategies, positive reappraisal, acceptance, and downward social comparison were significantly related to body satisfaction, whereas lowering aspirations, importance of appearance and importance of appearance ideals were not. In accordance with the life-span theory of control, older women reported less primary control. Age was significantly related to the utilization of all secondary control strategies, except acceptance. The results identity factors that influence and help maintain body satisfaction in this population. In addition, the results provide partial support for the life-span theory of control in understanding body satisfaction among women.
