Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 2007.
The purpose of this study was to explore the most frequent agitation behaviors reported among African-Americans with dementia and the relationship between religiosity and agitation. Family caregivers (N=87) of persons with dementia were recruited from two adult daycare centers. The caregivers were assessed regarding their perceptions of religiosity and the most frequent agitation behaviors experienced among their significant other with dementia. The Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory-29 (CMAI) and Duke Religiosity Inventory-5 (DRI) were used to measure agitation and religiosity, respectfully.

Out of the 29 behaviors listed on the CMAI, eight behaviors were identified as the most frequent problematic behaviors to caregivers. Cursing was the only predictive behavior to be significant but negatively correlated with religiosity (p < .05). More than half of the caregivers reported that their significant other identified with intrinsic religious values; participating in organizational and nonorganizational religious activities. Throughout history, religion has played an important role in the lives of African-Americans. Thus, implementing religious activities such as gospel or spiritual music could potentially decrease the frequency of agitation behavior.
