This research identified evaluation information related to elder self-neglect. Specifically, outcomes, domains, and impact areas related to elder self-neglect were conceptualized by professionals in Metro Chicago and synthesized to form a final map. This was accomplished using a mixed methodology called concept mapping. The research also rated this information on a 5 point scale for program focus and current capability among medical setting workers, social workers, and provider agency workers.

A final list of 100 unique outcomes was developed to form the map. The map consisted of 9 major domains: community's well being, involved others' support, improved social relationships, self awareness, empowerment, elder rights, self care, environmental management, and physical health and physical capacity. In addition, the domains grouped to form 3 major impact areas were identified, which included: improved quality of life, increased community awareness and involvement, and improved psychosocial functioning. A purposive sample was used to recruit the 88 respondents. Data was collected through face-to-face brainstorming sessions conducted by the investigator at various organizations and was also collected through a designated website set up by Concept Systems, Inc.

The domains with the highest program ratings were elder rights, improved social relationships, and self awareness and the domains with the lowest ratings were community's well being and self care. The highest mean rating for current capability were elder rights, involved others' support, and the improved social relationships and the domains that were perceived as the lowest in relation to current capability were community's well being, physical health, and physical capacity, environmental management, and self care.

The findings further revealed that there was a significant difference in levels of program focus and current capability between medical setting workers and community setting workers. No significant differences were found between PA workers and non-PA workers and social workers vs. non-social workers. This research suggests that more information is needed regarding professional development and program development efforts related to ESN.
