Californian elderly Hispanics (age 65 and over) have a high prevalence of undiagnosed medical conditions (i.e., diabetes, hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome) but the influence of these conditions on neuropsychological test performance has not been clearly established. This study explored the relationships between sociodemographical variables such as age, education, acculturation, and gender and the frequency of undiagnosed and untreated medical conditions, as well as the relationships between the frequency of medical conditions, metabolic syndrome, and neuropsychological test scores. Eighty participants were stratified into two groups (Gp. #1 = Hispanics with no or one diagnosed and treated medical condition [N = 10]; Gp. #2 = elderly Hispanics with all other combinations of undiagnosed conditions [N = 70]) for comparisons of their neuropsychological test scores. Results from this study found no significant correlations between the variables of undiagnosed health risk factors and metabolic syndrome and neuropsychological test performance of a sample of community elderly Hispanics. By using neuropsychological test scores from a healthy sample of elderly comparison group, the results of this study found no significant influence of undiagnosed health risks and metabolic syndrome on neuropsychological test performance of a community sample elderly Hispanic group. Because medical comorbidity is highly prevalent among elderly Hispanics, further study is suggested with more comparable and representative samples of healthy community elderly Hispanics.
