Purpose. The occurrence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is growing, with 68% of cases occurring in women. Reversal of day-night patterns, disturbed sleep-wake rhythms, and excessive daytime sleepiness are severe, common manifestations of AD extremely difficult to manage. Major objectives of this study were to examine the effect and duration of effect of timed blue-green light on the 24 hour sleep-wake pattern and global function in demented females with Alzheimer's disease.

520 $a Design. A two factor experimental design with repeated measures on one of the factors with convenience sampling was utilized. Twenty females with AD were randomized to the experimental or control condition.
520 $a Methods. Sleep efficiency (SE) and sleep fragmentation (SF) were measured via wrist actigraphy. Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) was measured utilizing the Stanford Sleepiness Scale. Blue-green light or dim red light was delivered via cap visor in the morning according to group assignment and study protocol.
520 $a Findings. SE, SF and EDS improved with morning light. Themes emerged in the qualitative examination of light on global function.
520 $a Conclusion. Future studies should be conducted with larger sample sizes, and include a focus on the effects of blue-green light on quantitative measures of global function. Light visors have potential as a safe and manageable light delivery method, well-suited to use in individuals with dementia.
