Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2010.
This study investigated cultural variability in the aging process. The purpose of this work was to determine if culture is related to the ability to age successfully, defined as high ratings on the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL; Lawton & Brody, 1969) scale. The sample utilized senior citizens from the age cohort of 75 years and above and also included European Americans, Puerto Ricans living on the U.S. mainland, and Puerto Ricans residing on their natal island. The results indicated no significant differences in older persons' ability to maintain an autonomous life (as per meeting IADL criteria); however, significant differences were noted in terms of independent mobility vis-a-vis ethnic background. A call has been made to expand this type of comparative study to other ethnically/racially diverse senior citizens to determine which cultural variables most influence independent mobility among older persons, as well as the influence that religion/spirituality may have in this aspect of successful aging.
