The purpose of this study is to explore the complex subjects of caregiving, culture, and working adults by comparing the effects of eldercare challenges on well-being and job performance between non-Hispanic White and Taiwanese-American working caregivers. It was also a study attempting to explain how cultural and socio-structural issues influence the minority- and working-caregivers, the two rapidly increasing caregiver-groups where research and literature are sparse currently.

Data from the "Employed Caregivers Assessment Project," a convenient sample of 200 working caregivers consisting of 100 White Americans and 100 Taiwanese Americans in Los Angeles County, was used in this study. The modified Stress Process Model, adopted by the author, was employed as the theoretical framework to examine how various factors affected caregivers' well-being. This study also employed a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative analyses to produce results.

The quantitative results showed that well-being and job performance of working caregivers were affected mostly by factors such as caregivers' demographic characteristics and caregiver role strains. The qualitative analysis also revealed many caregiving themes such as "multiple caregivers," "long-distance or trans-national care," "back migration," "role reversal," "family dynamics," and "family relations." When combined, both quantitative and qualitative results explained how caregiving affected caregivers' lives both culturally and socio-structurally and demonstrated how the caregiving themes positively and/or negatively influenced the Taiwanese-American and White working caregivers.

Despite its exploratory nature and limitations on the data's generalizability, this study is unique because it examined the complexity of caregivers who are balancing eldercare challenges and their own lives with cultural traditions, employment, and family. It is also the first to provide findings comparing two culturally diverse groups, Taiwanese-American and White working caregivers. As the nation prepares for the largest number of aging population and the biggest force of diverse informal caregivers ever needed over the next thirty years, this study brings not only more understanding of caregiving in the context of diversity and workforce but also important implications for social work practice, social welfare policy, and aging research,
