520 $a This dissertation explores Mzwakhe Mbuli's (Mzwakhe) contributions to the liberation struggle of South Africa and examines his role in the "new" South Africa. A synthesis of ideas from African artists about the roles and responsibilities of the artist in African society was used to form a theoretical framework for the analysis of Mzwakhe's work. The qualitative analysis consisted primarily of a discourse analysis of Mzwakhe's 15 CDs, interviews and recorded performances. Critical studies on Mzwakhe as well as interviews with artists, academics, political activists and people in Johannesburg, South Africa comprised the secondary materials that added an important general survey of opinions that contextualized the analysis of Mzwakhe's CDs.
520 $a This dissertation was guided by three central questions: (1) What was the contribution of Mzwakhe's poetry to the liberation struggle in South Africa? (2) How has Mzwakhe continued, expanded, rejuvenated and transformed the cultural tradition of the imbongi1 to fit the cultural, social and political circumstance of a contemporary liberation struggle? (3) What is the impact of Mzwakhe's work and what is his relevance in post-apartheid South Africa?
520 $a Though Mzwakhe operates in an urban contemporary environment using globally-influenced contemporary music, themes that emerged from an analysis of Mzwakhe's CDs during the liberation struggle, 1981-1993, reveal form and function similar to that of the traditional imbongi; however, Mzwakhe's use of language is decisively more direct and concise than that of the imbongi of the past. Themes of peace, reconciliation, and nation-building dominated Mzwakhe's music and public statements during the transitional period as apartheid came to an official end; he remained highly critical of the ills of South African society and the new government's broken promises. In post-apartheid South Africa, Mzwakhe continues to address social problems and act as a general voice of morality. In a context in which the imbongi has been reduced to a ceremonial spectacle, his most recent CDs are stylistically more confrontational in a critique of racism and xenophobia while emphasizing a return to biblical values. Besides performing at many community functions, Mzwakhe persists in his fight for musicians' rights.
