Senior Theatre directors' practices when directing aging performers in Senior Theatre performances or productions was the focus of this study. The directors in the study worked in several settings, including Senior Theatre companies or performing groups, community theatres, colleges and universities, as well as in other settings. Nineteen directors' responses to twenty questions about the nature of their practices were audio recorded and analyzed using Grounded Theory. Interview questions and data from the current study were organized into three major areas: intent of performances, growth as directors, and personal growth. Findings indicate that directors may emphasize artistic merit and production values, but directors focus more on cast members learning new skills; performance material that highlights aging processes and experiences; and audience impact when considering the intent of performances. Directors grow as directors when they encounter and incorporate social-psychological needs of aging performers and overcome the challenges and commitments that cast members present, recognizing the need to be flexible and adaptable. Findings also indicate that the experience of directing aging performers does result in changes in directors' attitudes, values, directing style, and approaches to directing for some directors while others experience no change, either personally or professionally.
