The present study examines individual relationships between neuropsychological measures of episodic memory and a measure of Braak tangle stage, a hallmark index of Alzheimer's disease, in 66 elderly over the age of 90 and compares these measures to the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Neuropsychological measures of episodic memory included California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition Short Form (CVLT-II SF) recognition discriminability index (d'), false positives, and cued intrusions. Recognition discriminability index (d') and MMSE were significantly related to Braak tangle stage category (low/high) but the difference between the measures in their individual relationships with Braak tangle stage category was not significant. Effect sizes for the CVLT-II SF and MMSE measures were small supporting the suggestion in previous research that Alzheimer's disease plays a lesser role in dementia in this very elderly group.
