This study examined the problem-solving abilities of older adults who were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and compared them to older adults with neurological disorders (ND) and to normal controls (NC) using the Key Search Test (KST). The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was considered a measure of overall cognitive functioning and used as a covariate. The results of the analysis found no significant differences in KST scores between the groups. Performance on the Trail Making Test Part B (TMTB) was moderately correlated with performance on the KST. The operating characteristics of the KST were calculated at three different cut-scores. These results are consistent with previous validation studies of the KST. Specific changes are suggested for further research to validate this test and describe its clinical utility.
