Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2010.
The purpose of this research study was to explore the perception of social workers regarding their roles and functions in meeting the quality of life needs for nursing home residents by documenting the social workers' lived experiences. The goal was to illuminate information regarding what functions social workers perceived to be most effective in meeting quality of life needs for residents. Phenomenology methodology offered insight into lived experiences of the social workers. Participants were social workers who met the criteria of individuals who worked in nursing homes with 120 beds or more located in Georgia or Alabama. The theoretical lens of social constructionism and role theory directed the study. Data analysis used descriptive coding and each participant verified individual information. Results identified eight thematic experiences shared among participants: advocacy; time spent with residents; educating consumers, staff, and families on social work roles; paperwork; meetings; nonessential social work functions; depression; and decreased functional capacity. Results identified only one strong effective role of the nursing home social worker: serving as an advocate for the residents. The results implied that nursing home social workers struggle to meet the quality of life needs for residents primarily due to the need for clear role expectations from regulatory officials and policy makers.
