Introduction : The hyperactive hive mind -- The case against email :Email reduces productivity -- Email makes us miserable -- Email has a mindof its own -- Principles for a world without email : The attention capitalprinciple -- The process principle -- The protocol principle -- Thespecialization principle -- Conclusion : The twenty-first-centurymoonshot.
Modern knowledge workers communicate constantly. Their days are definedby a relentless barrage of incoming messages and back-and-forth digitalconversation-a state of constant, anxious chatter in which nobody candisconnect, and so nobody has the cognitive bandwidth to perform substantivework. There was a time when tools like email felt cutting edge, but athorough review of current evidence reveals that the "hyperactive hive mind"workflow they helped create has become a productivity disaster, reducingprofitability and perhaps even slowing overall economic growth. Equallyworrisome, it makes us miserable. Humans are simply not wired for constantdigital communication. We have become so used to an inbox-driven workdaythat it's hard to imagine alternatives. But they do exist. Drawing on yearsof investigative reporting, author and computer science professor CalNewport makes the case that our current approach to work is broken, thenlays out a series of principles and concrete instructions for fixing it. InA World without Email, he argues for a workplace in which clearprocesses-not haphazard messaging-define how tasks are identified, assignedand reviewed. Each person works on fewer things (but does them better), andaggressive investment in support reduces the ever-increasing burden ofadministrative tasks. Above all else, important communication isstreamlined, and inboxes and chat channels are no longer central to how workunfolds.--
