Though the "import invasion" of European and Japanese cars didn't really pick up steam in the mainstream North American market until the Seventies, foreign cars were a small but still important part of the U.S. automotive landscape long before then. From the post-World War II trend toward zippy two-seat sports cars to the rise of fuel-sipping compact and subcompact cars, imports have played a key role in shaping the American automotive landscape.
