A first- and second-grade teacher's day is filled with countless decisions. Decisions abound as they consider everything from whether or not to have recess outside to what subject matter should be taught. Having had the opportunity to be in many exemplary classrooms, I began asking exemplary teachers what guided their decision making. In particular, what is it that guided their teaching of literacy? Several offered a little insight; many others could not articulate their thoughts at all.

The purpose of this study was to provide a description of the influences on the decision-making of the exemplary teacher of literacy. This 10-week qualitative study was phenomenological in nature. The data were collected from 2 first- and 2 second-grade teachers in 2 public elementary schools.

The constant comparative method of qualitative research was used to analyze the data collected. Themes emerged from the analysis, and evidence supporting the themes was coded accordingly. Major themes included the philosophy of the teacher, the professional development of the teacher, the intuition of the teacher, and the teachers' reflective nature. Each of the themes was supported by transcriptions taken from interviews with the teachers. Reflective journals kept by the teachers also served as a source of data.

Teachers rely heavily on their philosophical base when making decisions. They also rely heavily on professional development activities and the influence of intuition and reflection. It is hope that the findings of this research will improve our understanding of literacy instruction.
