The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of modified explicit reading instruction for Head Start preschoolers. This investigation attempted to determine if combining phonological awareness and effective instruction would positively impact literacy (pre-reading) skills in 3 to 5 year old students. A pretest-posttest design with 3 conditions (treatment, materials only, and traditional) was used to evaluate student outcomes. Additionally, the instructors' opinions regarding the instructional methods implemented in 3 conditions were obtained through a survey following the treatment.
