Early reading skills are one of the most important foundations on which to build lifelong learning. Without the appropriate foundations, children, adolescents, and adults never quite reach the same level as their peers in all aspects of education. The current study explains how the addition of a phonemic-awareness curriculum to regular kindergarten and first-grade students effected the acquisition of early reading skills as demonstrated by the DIBELS assessment tool. This pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design utilized ANCOVAS for the statistical measure. It is the researcher's belief that the amount of time the students were exposed to the intervention was the limiting factor, resulting in only 2 of 6 subtests showing effects.
