This study explores the relationships between the Home Literacy Environment and Phonological Awareness in kindergartners. The home environment is important to a child's developing literacy abilities. Parent-child interactions such as reading aloud to your child, literacy modeling and parents teaching their child to read and print words will be examined through a Home Literacy Environment Questionnaire. Also, within the questionnaire there are items that pertain to the resources parents provide to their children mainly that of reading materials, games, magazine subscriptions and computer software. As a possible inhibitor, the amount of time spent watching television will be examined. If there are resources or parent-child interactions that have a positive relationship with a child's Phonological Awareness, then this information can be shared with other parents and educators. This shared knowledge could result in helping children become more successful readers.
